Bedroom Tour

26 June 2014

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that I made some changes to our bedroom and I figured I'd give you a little tour today. I really wish I had some "before" photos but, like the bad blogger that I am, I didn't think that far ahead before I started in on the project.

We bought our house almost three years ago and the larger master bedroom was probably the selling point for us (we'll probably kick ourselves down the road because that meant the size of our spare bedrooms suffered big time). With that said, between the expense of having to furnish the room and just pure laziness, not a whole lot extra was added to it, which in turn made the room feel pretty, pretty empty. Since we've moved into our house, I've learned from experience that if I don't finish something I start, chances are it'll be a long while before it gets completed. Example: waiting almost two years before getting a light fixture for our living room. I guess I thought the hanging lightbulb added a little something extra to the room.

Anyways, enough chit chatting, here's our bedroom (obviously all tidied up for your viewing pleasure).

Besides some smaller decorative pieces, the main things I added were: a new comforter set (courtesy of my bored dog) from Costco, a rug from Home Depot, and an oversized mirror, chair, curtains, and floor vase from Bouclair. I'm a huge lover of rugs so I knew adding one was a must. They instantly make a room feel so much softer, cozier, and they seem to make everything come together more.  I'm also a fan of larger mirrors just resting on a wall so I thought this would be a perfect way to fill up some space.
Since the furniture and flooring was already so dark, I wanted to keep everything else pretty light so I added whites, creams, and some lighter, rustic wood colours.
Hope you guys liked this tour! I love walking into this room now because everything feels so fresh and cozy! Now, let's see how long I can keep this bedroom looking like this! Charley's being monitored very, very closely and I'm on the "not allowed to throw my clothes over the floor and dresser" duty. We'll see about that!!  I'm thinking about putting Todd on the "making the bed" duty, because that will probably be the hardest one of them all!

See you guys soon!

"Where are you guys going??"

What I Wore

24 June 2014

J. Crew Dress
Statement Necklace
Floral Clutch
Aldo Sandals
Dress: J. Crew (similar),  Necklace: Aldo,  Clutch: Call It Spring (3-4 years old),  Shoes: Aldo
What do you do when you have lots of time to kill in an empty parking lot before a wedding reception? Obviously take some pictures of what you wore to that wedding!

I bought this dress at a J. Crew Outlet when we were in Florida and my exact words when I tried it on were, "I know I'll get my use out of this one". Sure enough, for the first wedding of the season, this is the one I wore. Lately, I'm catching myself gravitating towards more basic dresses in solid colours, and I think it has to do with being able to play around with accessories more and, therefore, feeling like the dress is newer when I wear it again. I'm trying to get out of always feeling like I need to buy a new dress for a wedding or an event but, sometimes, it's just so darn hard! #girlproblems. As for the clutch, it's probably my favourite one that I own because the floral print is always the perfect addition to any spring or summertime outfit. I looked for a long time to find this one and, since then, I still can't seem to find another floral one that I love as much. Oh, and one quick thing about the sandals; while bows may not be for everyone, I say hand me over all the bows you can find. These reminded me of a pair of Kate Spade ones I was eyeing a few months ago, minus the larger price tag, of course. Plus, the heel height is perfect for this girl who looks like a deer walking on ice for the first time with anything higher.

Ps: One thing I should have added to this outfit was a jacket because it rained after...a lot!
Do you feel like you always need to buy a new dress for a wedding or a special event?

You Will Never Catch Me.....

20 June 2014

// Wearing sneakers with anything but yoga pants. Regardless if I'm going to be walking around all day, they won't be going on my feet. 10 hours walking around Disney World + Flip Flops = I'm sure my feet really, really appreciated that.

// Not saying "I love you" before getting off the phone with my parents or Todd.

// Eating inside a restaurant on a summers day when I could be having a drink and soaking up that sunshine on their patio outside.

// Going to a store just to browse. I either go with the intentions of buying something or I don't go in at all. Anything but is just plain torture.

// Writing a blog post every day. How in the world do some people do that? Superpowers?

// Choosing tea over coffee, chocolate over chips, or wine over beer.

// Watching a scary movie. It's never going to happen. Ever. #nightmaresforlife

// Being a vegetarian. I'm just not creative enough to figure out meals that don't involve meat. Plus, I love me a good steak or burger so there's that.

// Wearing a crop top, which is making shopping for the summer of 2014 extremely difficult, but it is making my stomach really grateful by not even looking in their direction.

// Sleeping my weekends away anymore. Call it getting old, but I just love waking up early on a Saturday morning knowing I have the full day ahead of me.

// Sleeping with my makeup on. Okay, maybe I should rephrase; you will never catch me sleeping with my makeup on under normal circumstances..aka when no drinks are involved.

// With cash on hand. Coffee, gum, you name the price range, my visa will be swiped.

// Washing my hair every single day or every second day or get the idea!

// With a full tank of gas in my car. I'm just so darn lazy to have to wait for it to fill up.

// Not blasting the radio whenever I hear an older, feel good song like I did a couple of days ago. Wilson Phillips, "Hold On" anyone?

// And not being so stinkin' happy on FRIDAYS!!!

Hope you're all so stinkin' happy too today! Have a great weekend, everyone!

Two Products I'll Be Repurchasing

18 June 2014

I guess I should start this post off by saying I have absolutely no idea how those beauty bloggers make showing products look so easy. I know it seems pretty simple, but that picture you see? Oh, it took a good half hour to get because of focusing, background and lighting failures. No joke! The good news, though, is that I was able to get one photo worth showing, even if you can barely pick out what it is that I have in my hands. Wait, I think that defeats the purpose. I think it's about time I really learn how to use that camera of mine if I ever want to do this again so both mine and my camera man's (errr Todd's) patience doesn't wear out. And I can't even begin to imagine how those bloggers do those YouTube channels that I spend hours and hours (and hours) watching.

So, now that we got all of that out of the way, let's get back to the reason why I came here; to tell you about my love for two products. I love experimenting with new makeup whenever I can (aka when my budget allows it) and, to be honest, I'm not really sure why I don't share products with you guys more often because I've tested quite a few in my days. Maybe it has something to do with trying to photograph them! But, the two products you see below are ones that definitely needed to be shared today.

Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray & Benefit POREfessional Agent Zero Shine

I consider the makeup products above, ones that aren't your "basics", to be "extras" and, in my experience, they can be a total miss because, most times, I don't really notice much of a difference at all with them, which can be pretty disappointing (especially considering the price tag). The Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray and the Benefit Pore Professional Agent Zero Shine are two "extras" that, not only work, but ones that I think do a pretty darn good job at that. In fact, I've added these "extras" into my daily makeup routine, which is pretty rare for me because I usually try to keep down on all of the work in the mornings. Girl loves her sleep too much!

Benefit POREfessional Agent Zero Shine: "An ultra lightweight powder that minimizes pores and reduces shine". For someone who has an oily t-zone but still likes to keep a "glowy" appearance overall and hates the caking of powders, this product is going to be your new best friend. It dissolves shine really well but it's still so lightweight and natural looking and, the best part, it creates almost an airbrushed finish. I don't have an all over oily face so I can't say how it would work for that, but it's the best thing I've ever used for t-zone coverage. So long, triangle on my forehead! While I've read some bad reviews around the packaging, I don't mind it at all and, in fact, I think the brush it comes with works well.

Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray: "A weightless spray that keeps makeup looking just-applied for up to 16 hours". While I don't think it lasts the 16 hours it says, it does allow me to now get through a 9 hour workday without it looking like my entire face has fallen off. It's so light and refreshing and you won't even notice that you're wearing it. Plus, there's no strong smell. I do not like missing one day without wearing this product and I know my love for it will continue to be strong over the hot, summer days....that's if we get any around here!

I can already say for certain that I'll be repurchasing these products when they run out!
Have you tried them before? If so, I'd love to hear your thoughts...from one product junkie to another!

New Look

17 June 2014

It's a really, really, really exciting day over here today because we just got a brand new look. What do you guys think? Please tell me you love it as much as I do! There's something so refreshing about a new blog design. It's kind of like when you buy yourself a new pair of shoes; the outfit that's been hanging in your closet for years and years suddenly becomes so new and exciting again, just by simply adding a new pair of heels.

If you're wondering who helped me pick out my new shoes was responsible for this new design, it was the lovely Jana from Jana Tolman Design. I honestly can not say enough about how talented and patient this girl is. I usually know what I like, but not until it's directly staring at me in the face. So, you can imagine how difficult it was for Jana to come up with something that I would love, without me actually telling her what it is that I love in the first place. But, she did it, and I honestly couldn't love it more!
Okay, well I'm off to admire this new design some more. Have a great day, everyone!

One more thing, have I ever mentioned just how addicting buying shoes can be? It's a good thing I can't make them myself because I'd have a brand new pair everyday. ;)

Celebration For Three

15 June 2014

June 15th is always a special day in my family because, not only is it my sister's birthday, it's my nephew's birthday too. How crazy is it that she had her first child on her 30th birthday? And now this year, we have yet another reason to celebrate today; Fathers Day. That's a whole lot of celebrations going on in one day!

Unfortunately, with my sister living in Toronto and my dad not getting home from work for a few more days, I won't get to see any of them, but let me tell you how thankful I am for a little thing called FaceTime, especially on days like today. Last year on Nathan's second birthday, I was able to join in on the fun and watch him open all of his presents at his party. This year, I'm thinking about getting them to carry me around with them for literally every second of the day because that would be fun and not weird at all.

My mom's in town this weekend so, to be completely selfless, we're making sure we do lots of fun things. Last night we watched The Fault In Our Stars (ahhh-mazing) and today we're going on a hike and then out for an early dinner. You know, just for them. I know how much my sister loves to shop so I guess maybe I could do that later too! ;)

In all seriousness, Dad, Lesley and Nathan, I hope you three know how much I love you and how much I wish I could be with you all today. If I had one more wish, though, it would be that we were all together again in Jamaica (because I'm pretty sure no one wants to relive our Florida trip again )......

Have a great day, you three!

Oh, and Nathan, have a juice for me today!

What's Been Going On This Week

13 June 2014

Happy Friday (the 13th?)! I realized last night that I haven't stopped in here once over this past week, so today I wanted to try and change that. In all honesty, I've been feeling like I don't have a whole lot to say lately, which is really strange for me because I like to talk....a lot! I think it has more to do with me not even trying to think of something to write about because, as everyone knows with blogging, thinking of what to write is a million times harder than the actual writing itself. So, since I accidentally, okay purposely, shut my brain off over these last few days, here's a look at what's been going on this week.

// I've been wondering why I don't buy myself fresh flowers more often. Sure, they're a bit on the pricey side for something that doesn't last very long (especially around this flower killer), but they've been an instant mood booster every time I've walked into my house this week. So, if buying fifteen dollar flowers at the grocery store is what it takes, sign me up more often!

// I managed to embarrass myself at work when I sent a 'good morning' message over our offices communicator (think like MSN Messanger) to my boss instead of to the person it was actually supposed to go to; Todd. It may or may not have had the word lovebug in there with some other words and lots of exclamation marks. That was a really fun way to get the day started.

// I mentioned last week that I was going to start round brushing my hair and, so far, my attempts have all been failures. I keep leaving my house thinking that it doesn't look so bad, until I happen to catch a glimpse of my afro myself in the car mirror. I really should know better than to experiment with my hair in the mornings when I barely have enough time to get dressed.

// I have been consumed this week by all things decorating related. I had been wanting to make some changes in our bedroom for a while now and I'm happy to say that I put the final touches on the room last night and it is now complete. As if getting up in time for work wasn't bad before, I decided to add the softest  sheets into the mix. Now we really got a problem.

// Speaking of decorating, recently I've been experiencing a major itch to get a new blog design so, who knows, maybe we could be seeing something really, really soon! ;)

// I've also been consumed this week with more episodes of How I Met Your Mother. It never fails, every night, around 9:30, I'm sat in front of the tv just waiting to see if this will be the episode where we actually find out who the mother is. I know that's the whole concept of the show, but I'm getting anxious now. So so so addicted to this show because it really is, insert show-related quote, legen....wait for it....dary! I've been blaming this for my lack of blogging and the sad/great news is that I still have a few more seasons to go. I'm hoping I can try and make it back here before the series finale! :)
What are your plans for this weekend?  I'm trying a new restaurant with some friends tonight and I think tomorrow me and my mom are going to watch The Fault In Our Stars. Have you seen the movie? Read the book?

It's June?/ Five On Friday

06 June 2014

It's so hard to believe that we're almost into the second week of June. June? I'm pretty sure that for those of us who live in Newfoundland, we actually don't believe it because the weather is making it next to impossible for us to do so. A few days ago I heard on the radio that the average temperature here for the month of May was approximately 4.3 degrees Celsius which, if my converter did that right, is about 40 degrees Fahrenheit. I know, my jaw dropped too. After such a long winter, and a spring that doesn't seem to be cooperating, it makes me wonder if summer is even going to make an appearance at all this year.
Seven and a half months later, I finally decided it was time to put some scissors and colour to my hair. Overall, I'm a little lighter, but  some darker pieces were added for a bit more dimension. Needless to say, it was desperately needed and I'm really happy with how it turned out. I especially loved how she styled it so I am going to try (key word: try) to start blow drying my hair with a round brush and see what I can come up with all on my own. I usually straighten or curl it, but somewhere in the middle like this would be nice too.

Thanks to the lighting and my crappy camera, this isn't the true colour, but you get the idea!

My friend texted me last night and told me a Sephora is opening here in August. Halle-freakin-lujah!!! Then we had a little discussion about how when that time comes, we're going to have to straight jacket ourselves (and our visa's) for some good ole fashioned damage control. #lookout

You know those million and one nail polishes you have lying around that are never used because you keep buying shiny new ones that you swear are completely different from the colours you already have? Well, I've been trying to bring some of them out of hibernation lately, and I am so glad I found Essie's Lapiz of Luxury in the mix because it's a favourite of mine right now. I love opaque and creamy colours and this blue/lilac/grey (I'm sure there's an actual word for that) colour is perfect.

Woah...close up! It looks better without the magnifying view, I promise!

I signed up for Erin's next challenge for the month of June, #1000in30, and I'm hoping not to be such a procrastinator with this one as I was with the #1800MinuteChallenge. Every day that it isn't raining, I'm trying to get outside for a run, even if it's as short as a twenty minute one. I am not stepping foot inside a gym for a while, so c'mmoonn nice weather!!

Happy Friday and have a great weekend, everyone!

Is anyone else excited about the new season of Orange is the New Black that's out today?

Some Bachelorette Talk

04 June 2014

Since I've started blogging, I can honestly say that most times when I come here I feel like I'm walking into a room completely blind folded without even the tiniest glimpse of what direction I should be going in. While I know that my topics are endless, dedicating a full post to talk about The Bachelorette isn't something on a normal day that comes to mind. Sure, I could come up with a few blog post ideas based on the show, like "reasons why I would be a sucky bachelorette", or "I want to stab my eyes out but here's some reasons why I keep coming back for more", but as much as I love love love this show, nine point nine times out of ten, I won't be writing about it.

With all of that said, though, there are times when something as crazy as reality tv sparks something. Something that sticks with me, beyond all of the drama and romance, and leaves me thinking. Monday nights episode of The Bachelorette was one of those times, so here I am, in front of my computer screen, wanting to share it all with you. And, if you've been keeping up with this season, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it too!

After the show was over, I honestly could not get it out of my head. I knew I was going to find watching this season a little strange because of the contestant Eric Hill, who died in a paragliding accident only a few weeks after being eliminated, but I had no idea how incredibly sad I was going to find it. I'm not sure if it was because of his larger than life personality, his exiting monologue where he talked about how we was ready now more than ever to find someone, yet we all knew his life at that point was soon ending, or even his tribute that didn't seem to be quite enough. It was all sad.

The part that hit me the hardest, though, was the heated last words spoken between him and Andi. Now I know a ton of editing takes place so, as viewers, what we see isn't always the full story, but I'm fairly confident in saying, that in this circumstance, if Eric and Andi had a better interaction after that argument, I'm sure ABC would have aired it. Do I think Andi overreacted over his 'poker face' comments? Absolutely, I don't think he intentionally meant to hurt her, and in all honesty, I kind of agreed with some of the things he said. But I also think that if Eric was just like any other regular contestant on the show, that last scene would definitely not have had so much controversy surrounding it as what it has had. But, unfortunately, Eric wasn't just like any other contestant and now that last scene is how Andi will remember (not to mention the millions of viewers) her very last discussion with him. Definitely not what I would want.

And so through a show that's labelled under trashy reality tv, I'm reminded of the little phrase that I was taught from a very early age by my mom; never go to bed angry with someone. As silly as it sounds, it holds a pretty powerful underlying message because you honestly never know what your last words with someone will be. I know, some battles are bigger than others, and some things aren't as easy to let go of, but when you come from a family of worriers and over thinkers like myself, I can guarantee you that leaving things unpleasant with someone you care about will probably eat you alive. While Andi's and Eric's "relationship" was short, I'm sure it's not easy for her to look back on now, as she said in her interview, "I feel like if I had that conversation with him [at The Men Tell All] he'd probably say something, I'd probably laugh and it would be water under the bridge. We don't get to have that conversation and that's a tough pill to swallow".

What were your thoughts on the latest episode?
Are you hoping to see how Andi and the remaining guys were told of Eric's death in the upcoming episodes?

If you love hearing more thoughts about the Bachelorette (guilty as charged!), read what Chris Harrison and Jillian Harris (love her, and her blog) had to say, as well as a post from Eric's sister herself.
